2009 Deaflympic Selection for Euan Cheyne
Local Westhill swimmer Euan Cheyne has once again stepped up to the plate (as well as onto the podium) in his qualification bid to participate in the Deaflympics 2009, taking place in Taipei, Taiwan, in early September.
It will be Euan’s second time to Taipei Taiwan having previously qualified as part of the GB Squad for the World Deaf Swimming Championships in 2007. Euan was all the more determined to repeat his fine achievement and did so in rather impressive style during the recent official trial event, at the National Deaf Long Course Swimming Championships, held at Loughborough University Pool on 28th March. Euan’s final medal tally on the day included gold in the 200m IM and 100 Freestyle, and silver medals in the 100m Fly, 50m Fly and 50m Freestyle, and this tremendous performance ensured he gained selection as the only Scot to represent Great Britain in September, in a team which includes young swimmers from places as far afield as Leicester, Leatherhead, Wrexham, Felixstowe, Worthing and also USA.
Westhill Swimming Club (WDASC), where Euan has been a swimmer for eight years, are delighted with his selection to the Squad and hope his big trip proves successful. And so are the GB Team Co-ordinators whose spokesman Gordon Hay, a member of UK Deaf Sport said: “The GB Deaf Swimming Club is a recognised NDSO and have worked closely with UK Deaf Sport for the preparation of the trip to Taiwan. Euan Cheyne has demonstrated his outstanding talent at swimming in both Deaf and mainstream competitions and is identified as one of the potential stars in the GB team”.
