2008 Minnows Meet Report - Westhill Successes!

It is almost inevitable that no matter what journey the sport of swimming takes you on, whether this leads to success at the top level or merely undertaking casual lengths of a pool in order to keep fit, the likelihood is you will have started that journey as a Minnow. These enthusiastic and energy-charged youngsters learn their trade at such competitions as these and this year’s W.D.A.S.C. Minnows Meet certainly indicates that there are some talented swimmers of the future in the local area.
With representatives from a host of North Clubs on show (a mix of the usual local clubs plus some outlying areas such as Huntly, Alford, Arbroath, St Thomas and Monifieth) this ensured a super atmosphere both in the water and on poolside. Although less emphasis is made on winners and losers at this level, there were a number of worthy performances on display. The team winners of the Peco Trophy for Best Club went to the talented Banchory Beavers Squad and the Gilbert Cup, awarded to Westhill District’s best individual swimmer, was proudly collected by Caitlin Pilkington following her double Gold medal haul in the 11 year olds 50m Backstroke and 50m Breaststroke.
Other Westhill District medal winners on the day were Eric Kerr (Gold in 11 year olds 50m Backstroke), Lewis Main (Gold in 9 year olds 50m Breaststroke), Amy Farquharson (Silver in 11 year olds 50m Butterfly), Matthew Grainger (Silver in 9 year olds 50m Breaststroke) and Jessica Thomson (Bronze in 9 year olds 50m Butterfly). Well done to this group and indeed all other swimmers who may have produced a personal best, an improved turn or start or perhaps the achievement of a small personal goal at this event.
