Euan takes on the World!

Euan CheyneA speculative invitation by the Development Manager for UK Deaf Sport has resulted in potential world recognition for a talented local swimmer. Westhill District Swimming Club member Euan Cheyne was invited to Warwick in April to compete in a qualifier for the forthcoming World Deaf Swimming Championships  and proved he could comfortably compete with his peers at this high level by successfully qualifying for the event, to be held in Taipei during August this year. This Championship takes on additional significance as it will be the last major swimming event of its kind prior to the Deaflympics in 2009.
Euan’s impact at Warwick was underpinned by no less than six medal-winning performances as he battled to Gold and a new Scottish Deaf record in the 100m Freestyle (58.34), Silver in the 200m IM (2.26.20), another record at Scottish level, plus further Silver medals in 50m Freestyle (26.88), 50m Fly (29.86), 100m Fly (1.07.63) and 50m Breaststroke (36.74) thus suggesting the 16 year old can compete comfortably on the world stage whilst also justifying his decision to make the long journey to Warwick at short notice.

Taipei, however, will be a somewhat longer and more challenging journey and fund raising activities are underway already to assist Euan make the best of this tremendous opportunity.
